“I wasn’t expecting that!” “I didn’t know I could do a 7-mile walk!” “I had no idea this place was just on our doorstep!” These are just some of the comments made by children and their parents who have experienced the adventure that is Trails of the Unexpected.
Aimed at families (and, in some cases, dogs!) these walks are suitable for adults and children of all ages, although very young children will likely need to be carried for some of the way. Each walk typically has a theme, or an ‘adventure’ dimension, to encourage children to fall in love with the great outdoors, enjoy the walk and the challenges set by the organisers, and learn useful life skills such as map reading, all in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.
But perhaps the most rewarding – and for many the most unexpected – aspects of these walks are the new friendships that form as we journey together, making the next walk something that everyone looks forward to.
